Most cases of TMD occur due to a bad bite or teeth not lining up properly while you sleep. This can cause you to grind your teeth while you sleep, overusing the muscles surrounding your TMJ until they become sore. The mouthguard prevents you from grinding your teeth, and keeps your jaw in place while you sleep so the joint and muscles can relax.
Every case is different, so your mouthguard is custom-fit to your jaw. You can even use the TMD treatment mouthguard during the day if the pain is too severe.
